Development of roads and the spurt in the number of vehicles on the roads are indeed indicators of a country's development, but bad roads, incompetent drivers, unruly traffic, and the ever-increasing number of vehicles have put life at risk. Accidents have become commonplace.
Overspeeding has become the mantra on the road. Majority of the road users lack awareness of the road signs and rules. They resort to dangerous and rash driving putting life in peril. The ease in obtaining a license, drunken driving, underage or non-license holders behind the wheels all work hand in glove in endangering the life of the road users.
Measures should be taken to ensure safety on the road. The process of obtaining a license should be made tougher and only those who qualify for the license should be granted one. They should be trained on proper road use. They ought to be made aware of the signals and signs that guide traffic. They should be taught proper road etiquettes and to respect other road users. It should be instilled in them that good road etiquettes have a lot to do with good driving. Stricter laws should be enforced on the road to deal with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, underage driving, etc. An ideal condition would be responsible, law abiding, and safe drivers on the road with good road etiquettes.
